November Athlete of the Month: Sarah Jennings
Each month at Crofton CrossFit, we like to recognize one of our members as “Athlete of the Month” to show them how much we appreciate their hard work and dedication. The CrossFit community is composed of people from all different walks of life, each with their own unique story. Congratulations to Sarah Jennings for being chosen by our coaches as our November Athlete of the Month! Sarah is a competitive athlete and hard worker who trains often and always walks in the door with a smile.

CROFTON CROSSFIT MEMBER SARAH JENNING’S FITNESS JOURNEY
I joined CrossFit almost two years ago when a co-worker convinced me to check out Crofton CrossFit. I have no life and apparently live in a box because I had never heard of CrossFit. After convincing me to check it out, I did a quick (not so quick) 10-minute introduction workout to see if CrossFit was for me. My never-ending 10-minute workout of pain had me way too excited to join right then and there. I’ve played sports my whole life, competing in Division I rowing and then entering the triathlon world post college. However, I was looking for something to do all year round that would challenge me. One thing I love about physical fitness is pushing yourself past your limits. Nothing like a mental fight with yourself when you brain is telling your body you can’t continue, and knowing that it’s all a mental game.
After that 10-minute workout, I knew that I had to join. My whole first year, I only went to CrossFit three times a week, didn’t focus on weightlifting, and just used CrossFit as a way to stay in shape for my PT tests. Also, I was using CrossFit as a way to prepare myself for Ranger School. It wasn’t until the open this year that I learned of the CrossFit games, seeing just how big the CrossFit community really is. During this time, I realized that I really wanted to focus on strength training and start competing. Being more of an endurance athlete my whole life, weightlifting is an absolute challenge for me. Not only is weightlifting a challenge, but I should thank CrossFit for showing me just how inflexible I am (tears, lots of tears).
So, initially joining CrossFit, I joined in order to use this as a platform to help prepare me for Ranger school. Now, I hope to just continue with CrossFit and start competing at a higher level. Not only have I found a passion for CrossFit, but it has completely changed my views on what the athletic female body should look like. I went from being that person who said “I just want to be toned” to complaining about wanting to gain pure muscle and strength. I have a lot of work ahead of me, but luckily I’m surrounded by like-minded people willing to help me get there.
