July Athlete of the Month: Beth Ferrer
Each month at Crofton CrossFit, we like to recognize one of our members as “Athlete of the Month” to show them how much we appreciate their hard work and dedication. The CrossFit community is composed of people from all different walks of life, each with their own unique story. Congratulations to Beth Ferrer from the 6 a.m. class for being chosen by our coaches as the July athlete of the month! Crofton CrossFit Member Beth Ferrer’s Fitness Journey
What can I say about myself? I’m a military brat, but have lived in Maryland for the majority of my life. I grew up with three siblings, I’m an Aunt to five nieces, and one nephew. I’m a doggie mom to Zoe, I have a job that I love and now a newfound love for working out.
I was always active as a kid, constantly playing outside with my siblings, or various sports. In high school, I played volleyball and tried to be active. It was during my growing up years that I became an overweight teen, turned adult. When I turned 19, I turned to drinking and smoking to help curb my appetite and lose weight. That only lasted for so long before the smoking stopped my weight loss. After that, I turned to an unhealthy lifestyle of two different eating disorders through most of my early to mid twenties. Once I stopped the unhealthy behavior of the eating disorders and smoking, all the weight that I had lost came right back now. I spent the last part of my 20’s as an overweight adult again. I was unhappy with all aspect of my life at that time. When I turned 30, I made a promise to start losing weight and get healthy, the correct way. I started eating “clean”, and working out to fitness programs. It helped me to lose about 70 lbs, and I’ve maintained that for the last couple of years.
With working out, I would get bored very easily and I can’t say that I’ve always loved working out. But I have always, always wanted to try CrossFit, but thought it was too hard, or I wasn’t in the right shape… yet. I kept putting it on the back burner. In late 2015, I decided to bite the bullet and wanted to see what CrossFit was all about. That is when I walked into the doors of Crofton CrossFit and fell in love with CrossFit. From the start through the classes, to then getting into regular WOD classes, I felt a sense of belonging and energy that the coaches want nothing but for you to succeed. I have terrible mobility and flexibility, so it has been challenging, and the coaches have always giving me pointers and helpful tips. I have definitely improved since walking into the doors of CCF and I know each week it is will only get better. I’ve also fallen in love with the people who belong to CCF, they are some of the friendliest and most driven people I’ve ever met. Each week, I look forward to coming into class, and getting to know the members that attend. It is really like a big family. I’m very thankful for Crofton CrossFit and excited to be Athlete of the Month.
