Before joining the ECF program, what was your standard fitness routine lacking?

I realized that in order to achieve my goals in competition and otherwise that I needed a more focused program with more volume.

What made you want to join the ECF program?

First, the ability to have someone like Coach Josh who is so knowledgeable and skilled doing the programming was a big draw. Second, I wanted a new challenge since I couldn’t continue my rugby career, and this allows me to still train at a high level, just in a new sport.

Did you have any reservations about the program prior? If so, what were they?

I was very nervous about simply not being able to do some of the usual high-level Crossfit techniques, but Josh has been very accommodating and I am progressing well.

Since joining the program, can you tell me a little bit more about your experience getting started?

Going from the classes into EC was a decent shock. I realized that it was quite an increase in training volume. There was definitely a much greater demand in terms of physical output. I have to pay more attention to my mobility and nutrition to maximize my ability. It is also a bit weird training by myself. I really like the community aspect of Crossfit and how we work out and support each other, so to start training by myself was a decent shock.

Did you come into the program with any injuries or concerns?

I have had long term injuries, including two shoulder surgeries in the past 3 years. I was concerned about the volume and its impact on my shoulder, but Josh has been accommodating and we do a decent amount of shoulder stability work to keep me injury-free.

What kind of goals did you create through the program?

I wanted to improve my Olympic lifting technique and numbers, I wanted to cut some weight, and I wanted to progress in my competitive Crossfit. In the future, I would like to do an Olympic weightlifting meet, and I would like to improve my position in the Open in 2017.

How have you progressed throughout the program?

I have achieved PRs in almost all of my lifts, including Olympic lifts. I have always had trouble with gymnastic movements, but now I can consistently do long strings of toes-to-bar and butterfly pullups. Mostly, I have a lot more confidence in myself that I have the physical capacity to do whatever Coach wants me to do that day.

Can you describe your experience with FitBot?

Fitbot is pretty simple to use, it shows you your workouts and you fill in whatever your results were. Very much a no-frills setup.

What would you say to someone who is hesitant about joining the program and working with Coach Josh to achieve their fitness and nutrition goals?

I would say that they should sit down and consider all of the positives that come from the program. The fact that Josh can tailor the program toward whatever specific goals a person has is a huge plus. Make no mistake, it is very hard work, but it is rewarding.

Is there anything you feel that other people should know about your experience regarding the program?

I have plenty of days when I see the workouts programmed and I think that I can’t do them or that they’ll be impossibly hard. I will say that I have surprised myself many times and learned that my body can do some incredible things that I had never thought possible.

Is there anything we can do to improve the program or your experience thus far?

Don’t think so at the moment.
